Mangalsutra and tilhari buying guide

Agree on the actual piece before comparing quotes

A familiar name is a starting point. The wearer's preferred form, proportions and occasion should guide the conversation.

Do not assume a page headed mangalsutra and tilhari describes one interchangeable design. For a tilhari inquiry, identify the pendant you mean and discuss how it will be worn. For a mangalsutra inquiry, specify the intended pendant and bead or chain arrangement. Show a reference and ask the jeweller to confirm the name they use for that exact piece.

If the purchase has a personal or ceremonial meaning, ask the wearer and family which details matter to them. Avoid deciding the colour, composition or occasion from a category label alone. A useful brief records their preferences without assuming one practice applies to everyone.

Compare the parts separately

For the pendant, request front, side and back views, dimensions and a clear view of its attachment. For beaded strands, discuss the arrangement, threading and how worn thread or an individual bead could be replaced. For a chain arrangement, check the attachment opening, clasp and flexibility. The chain buying guide adds questions about fastening compatibility.

Compare two proposed wearing lengths using the same pendant reference. Ask where the centre will fall on the intended outfit and whether the piece can be adjusted. A drawing can help communicate this choice; any GoldNepal design illustration remains inspiration and does not prove that the illustrated construction can be made.

Questions for the quote

  • Are the pendant and strands included together, and which parts can be changed?
  • What weight is being priced as gold, and are beads, thread or other materials recorded separately?
  • Who handles restringing, clasp repairs or length changes, and what would those services cost?

Read the displayed source and date on the Nepal gold rate page, then use the quote checklist to record the jeweller's actual terms.

Coordinate one agreed reference

If a relative will visit a shop in Nepal, send one annotated image with the pendant, strand arrangement and length identified separately. Ask them to confirm proposed substitutions with the wearer before accepting a quote. Use the jewellery directory to find contact details, then check directly whether the business can discuss the requested piece and timing.
