24K vs 22K Gold: What Buyers Should Check
Compare 24K and 22K by their theoretical gold fractions, understand fineness, and know what a purity label cannot verify about an individual item.

24K and 22K describe gold content on a 24-part scale. By that calculation, 24K is 24 parts out of 24 and 22K is 22 parts out of 24, or about 91.67%. The remaining 2 parts in a 22K alloy are other metals. These are purity ratios, not test results for a particular piece.
24K and 22K at a glance
| Rating | Gold fraction by calculation | Other alloy fraction |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 24 ÷ 24 = 100% on the 24-part scale | 0% on that scale |
| 22K | 22 ÷ 24 ≈ 91.67% | 2 ÷ 24 ≈ 8.33% |
How karat and fineness relate
Karat expresses gold content in 24 parts. Fineness uses 1,000 parts. The 22/24 calculation is about 916.7 parts per thousand; jewellery references commonly use 916 as a 22K fineness example. A product may also be described with a fineness such as 999 or 999.9. Those numbers state a fineness level; a label alone does not show that the individual item was independently tested. Marking systems and their legal meaning vary between markets.

A 10-gram example
If 10 grams is the net weight of the gold alloy, the 22K calculation is 10 x 22 ÷ 24, or about 9.17 grams of gold content. This is arithmetic based on the stated rating, not an assay. If the scale weight includes stones or other materials, it is not the same as net gold weight.
What the rating can and cannot tell you
Karat or fineness describes a proportion. It does not, by itself, establish a piece's maker, test history, mark authenticity, full alloy recipe, construction, durability, or final price. Two items with the same rating can differ in design and materials. Ask what the stated weight includes and what documentation applies to the item you are considering.
Compare a quote carefully
Before comparing two offers, check that the stated purity and weight basis are clear and that both quotes describe the same materials and work. A gold-content calculation is only one part of a finished jewellery quote. GoldNepal's karat calculator estimates metal value from the values entered; it does not test an item or calculate every charge on a seller's bill. Use the weight converter to express amounts in the same unit before comparing them.
