Karat expresses gold content in 24 parts; this calculator uses that ratio for a metal-value estimate.

Karat expresses gold content in 24 parts. For example, 18K is 18/24, or 75%, while 14K is 14/24, or about 58.33%, by arithmetic. See the World Gold Council's guide to gold jewellery and karat for a general explanation of gold purity.
